Special Note: On Sunday, Pastor Bryon announced that he will be leaving Kingsway Church and that the next 8 weeks will mark a transition period during which a new senior pastor will be chosen. He has expressed a calling to plant a new church in an as-yet undetermined location in the country. This guide is meant as a way to think through some aspects of the change and transition that awaits our church.
  • How well would you say that you generally handle change?  Do you tend to dread change or thrive on it?
Discussion Questions:
  • Read Joshua 1:1-9
    • What stands out to you from this passage?
    • What do you think the mood and atmosphere was like among the people of Israel as they both grieved the loss of their leader, Moses, and looked forward in anticipation to crossing the river?
    • What do you think Joshua was thinking and feeling as he received this message from God?
  • Read Acts 13:1-3
    • What stands out to you from this passage?
    • In his commentary on the book of Acts, John Calvin writes about this passage saying, “Note Luke’s intention.  Paul and Barnabas were ministers of the church of Antioch; God was now calling them to another place. In case anyone should think that church lacked good and fit ministers, and that God was providing for other churches at its expense, Luke says that there were so many there that enough remained for its own use while it helped others. Even in our time God enriches certain churches more than others, so that they may be nurseries for propagating the Gospel.”  How can it help during this time of change and transition to understand that God is not providing for other churches at our expense and to instead view Kingsway as a nursery for propagating the Gospel?
  • Read John 17:17-26
    • What stands out to you in this final prayer of Jesus with and for his disciples?
    • How can you work to maintain and to build unity and love among the body of believers during this challenging time when the baton of leadership is being passed?
Renewing Your Mind:
  • “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” – Ephesians 4:16-17

Discussion Guide prepared by Steve Lamp
Steve and his wife Melissa began attending Kingsway in 2014. Not normally prone to public displays of emotion, he wept during the first worship service and knew he had found home. As an avid reader, Steve believes the ideas we allow into our minds are critical to our spiritual formation. He enjoys exploring nature, playing and spending time with his two young sons and over-quoting his favorite authors, C.S. Lewis and Dallas Willard.
