Turbulence: Opportunity for Real Peace

by Bill & Elaine Lang

Most people are uncomfortable with change. We aren’t talking about simple change to our everyday lives right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The changes have been drastic, extremely unsettling, with no honest timeframe for what we will consider the “new normal”.

Pastor Bryon and Lindsay shared today about how we as a church at Kingsway have been spiritually prepared over the last several weeks for change. God has been preparing the Church for much longer. Pastor Bryon went on to reference Mark 4:35-41. Yet when this current COVID-19 storm arose suddenly, just as in the scripture in Mark, the tendency for all of us as humans is panic.

When we consider this story in Mark, we see the disciples go straight to Jesus. Yes, they may have been afraid, but they set their eyes on the Lord. We loved how Lindsay references the storm and how He calmed the storm. She also referenced Psalm 23 (ESV):

1) The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2) He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
3) He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
4) Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me.
5) You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

See that the scripture says The Lord is my shepherd. This is personal, not theoretical. The Lord cares for you, and is watching over you, and He will preserve you. God knows your every need in these stormy times.

In John 16:33 (ESV) Jesus tells us: In Him we may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; I have overcome the world.

Throughout history there have been storms. In our current culture, we have acclimated to safety and risk mitigation for at least a generation. The “new normal” is going to cause us to prepare for the storms on the horizon. Past moves of God have followed turbulent times.
Where are we going to choose to run? Are we going to choose fear and panic? Or are we going to choose Jesus?

In our humble opinion, we sense this is a great time of opportunity. Be refreshed by His word. Remember Psalm 119:105: God’s word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path. Where is He leading you?

Take this time of forced isolation and quarantine to meditate on God’s word and ask the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, and direct you; calm the present storm in your own being; and empower you with His presence to be light in the darkness.
